Accessible Pre-War - New York, NY
Striking a balance between the inherent and unavoidable challenges of space management that a modestly sized pre-war Manhattan apartment presents with the unit owner's growing accessibility needs offered many challenges. The owner's dedication to maintaining much of the apartment's character while achieving those goals added another layer of complexity.
MS , along with a very dedicated collaboration with the owner, was able seize on the moments where the apartment's layout alongside cabinetry and furniture could offer the opportunity for extra layers of functionality and flexibility unique to the very specific set of needs.
The needs of the unit owner offered opportunities to explore how to use everyday furniture items and to provide an additional layer of functionality and accessibility while fitting into the larger context of the space.
